Comparing surface temperatures of synthetic (artificial) turf with natural turf

There has been an increased interest in replacing natural lawns with artificial or synthetic turf.  While there are a number of reasons why this is NOT a good idea, the video above should provide some insight into what to expect the environment to feel like when one of these synthetic systems is installed.  Let me know what you think!

  1. Thank you! This is exactly the types of readings we have been getting on our artificial fields > blacktop > cement>natural turf,. A video is even better than the stills we have been taking.
It’s mostly the dark plastic. Why are we insisting on using it when a nice light color would at least keep the temp down to asphalt levels! But using plastic and rubber at all is fraught with prop

  2. Hi Kathy,
Thank you for your comments. I have been receiving a number of questions related to the use of synthetic turfgrass lately. While I have tried to explain the types of temperatures that are commonly observed, I felt that the video would do a better job of getting the message across. Please feel free to share/use this if you can.
    Best regards,
    Jason
